Course Description:   The State Fire Marshal Division IFSAC Fire Officer I course is designed to provide the Fire Officer candidate informationthat will help them to apply key concepts in the role of first‐line supervisor. Candidates will acquire the knowledge and theskills to meet the minimum job requirements to function as a first‐line supervisor.

Course Objectives:   Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to qualify for certification at the Fire Officer I level (NFPA 1021) and function as an entry level company officer. The student will be able to effectively manage human resources, community/public relations, fire department organization and administration (including budgets, reports, and planning), fire inspections and investigations, community risk reduction, emergency services delivery, and safety.

Prerequisites:   Memo from Chief or designee requesting certification. (Must be submitted prior to starting the course pre-work)

Candidates must provide a copy of their Nevada Firefighter II, Fire Service Instructor I and NFA Incident Safety Officer certificates. (Must be submitted prior to starting the course pre-work)

SFMD Fire Officer I JPR Skill Sheets will be completed during the course. (IFSAC Requirement)

Candidates will register through the SFMD’s ResourceOne account for the online portion.

Candidates must successfully complete the written test on the last day of class.

Class Minimum : 11 students        Class Maximum : 12 students
must have 11 registered by 10/17/2024 or class will be cancelled.
Selection Criteria:   Individuals who have the responsibility to be in the role of company officer at emergency operation situations or as a first-line supervisor of a fire company. Individuals who are planning in attending this course have to be an active member of a fire service or governmental agency.

Enrollment:   Register for the course and have completed prerequisite for the course. If the prerequisites are not included on the student's training portal transcripts, it is the student's responsibility to upload the certificates of completion when registering for the course. Students will not be allowed to register for the course without proof of completion of the prerequisites. E-mail the course point of contact for questions.

Notes:   Students must register and be accepted in advance and upload any required prerequisites to their training portal or they will NOT be allowed to attend the training session.

Students should attend all sessions of the course and be prepared to interact in course activities. Credit for course completion will not be granted if more than 10 percent of the course is missed. You must notify SFM Training Staff or Lead Instructor if you expect to miss any course sessions.

If a student is unable to attend for which he/she is registered, it is the responsibility of the student to withdraw from the course on the training portal at least seven (7) days prior to the start of the course. Failure to timely withdraw from the course may result in the student being limited from registering for future classes. Withdrawals less than 7-days prior to the start of the course will be permitted for a documented emergency that is approved by the training supervisor.

Instructors:   Jeff Prokosch

Captain with Sparks Fire Department. He is a graduate of the National Fire Academy Managing Officer Program, has aBachelors degree in Fire Administration with a certificate in Progressive Management and Research, and has been a NV Fire Master Instructorsince 2011. He believes balancing education and hands on training is how one truly succeeds in this career.

Larry Haydu

Currently the Deputy Fire Chief of Training for the Nevada National Security Site Fire-Rescue. He retired as an Assistant Fire Chief of the Clark County Fire Department in March of 2022, where he served as the Chief of the Rural Division, managing 10 Volunteer Fire Stations and 130 Volunteers. In October of 2017 Larry was assigned as the Deputy Incident Commander during the response to the Route 91 shooting. Prior to Clark County Larry had served as a Heavy Rescue Captain at Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale and was the Assistant Fire Chief at the Burbank Airport in California. Larry currently serves on two Incident management teams and is an adjunct instructor for the College of Southern Nevada and the Nevada State Fire Marshal. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Fire Science and is certified at the Fire Officer IV level.

Lacey Parrott

Currently the Assistant Fire Chief of the Yerington/Mason Valley Fire Protection District. She has been active in the Fire Service for 22 years, filling the role as the Department's Training Officer for the last 15 years. She has been an Adjunct Instructor for the State Fire Marshal Division for 15 years.

Larry Goss

has 30 years of fire service experience and is currently the Deputy Fire Chief of Training and Safety for East Fork Fire Protection District in Minden Nevada. Larry holds a degree in Fire Science and Administration. He is a Safety Officer Type 2 and working on Type 1 qualification. As education and safety are his priorities, Chief Goss also serves as an adjunct instructor for the Nevada State Fire Marshal Training Division.
